What Fans Notice, and What We Control

Face accuracy

Eye spacing, eyelid angle and mouth curve are checked against your art in 3D, then verified on the physical sample. Fans spot a 2 mm error.

Batch consistency

The approved sample is frozen and photographed. Every unit is judged against it.

Hair and costume engineering

Hairlines, parting and layering are patterned, not improvised.

Safe detachables

Removable parts are tested for small-part and tension compliance.

IP protection

Locked patterns, project-coded files, no reuse.

OEM Character Plush: Likeness, NDA and Detail Limits

How a 2D character sheet survives 3D modelling, sampling and a licensor review without drifting off-model.

Own sampling room · 10+ years OEM · NDA before file review

Ask a production question
How do you keep a 2D character on-model in 3D, and how many revisions do I get?

The character sheet is the contract. We lock head-to-body ratio, eye spacing, marking placement and colour codes before modelling, then return a 3D render on day 3 from front, side and back with the sheet overlaid — you approve geometry before anything is cut. Two structural revisions are included at sampling; beyond that we are re-patterning, and we quote that at cost instead of hiding it in the unit price.

Most drift happens because the sheet shows one expression. Send the neutral pose and a profile view as well, and the first sample lands much closer.

Can you sign an NDA before the file is opened, and how is the artwork handled?

Mutual NDA is signed before we open a single file, and we can work to a licensor's style guide with the approval loop built into the schedule. Files sit on an isolated project drive with named access, sample photos are watermarked, and nothing appears on our site or social channels without written release. On request we delete working files at project close and confirm in writing.

For unreleased IP we also ship in unmarked cartons with a generic invoice description — a small detail that has saved more than one client a leak.

What is the smallest embroidery detail that survives on a 20 cm doll?

About 0.8 mm of stitch width at 1:1. Below that the needle cannot lay a clean satin column and the line reads as fuzz. On a 20 cm doll the face is roughly 55 mm wide, so a 12 mm eye has room for a pupil and one highlight, not three. Where art needs more we change technique: print or sublimation on a woven patch for gradients, appliqué for large flat shapes.

Nine to twelve thread colours per head is the practical ceiling before changeover cost climbs. You see a digitised preview before the first stitch is laid.

Rooted hair, a sewn wig or flocking — which survives retail handling?

Rooted hair gives a real part line but sheds, and a retail shelf is exactly where that shows. Above 30 cm we recommend a sewn wig on a fitted cap: it holds volume, tolerates repeated brushing and can be restyled. Flocking suits short, tight styles.

Whichever you choose, we add a comb-through and shed check at QC and specify surface-clean only — a rooted doll that goes through a machine comes out bald. Hair direction is set on the pattern so the fringe falls correctly on both sides.
